Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships give young people the opportunity to earn a salary and gain qualifications whilst developing valuable workplace skills and experience. The Department of Earth Sciences actively encourages staff to consider whether an apprentice would be suitable to fill their vacancy when they start recruitment exercises. Apprenticeships typically last between two to three years in duration and are usually full-time. The apprentice would normally go to college to study on their chosen course one day per week, spending the remaining four days in the workplace.

The Department of Earth Sciences have previously employed two apprentices: one in the Workshop and one in the HR Team.

The advantages to the Department of having an apprentice are:

  • Apprenticeships help to improve productivity and competitiveness. Training apprentices are more cost effective than hiring skilled staff, leading to lower overall training and recruitment costs.
  • Apprenticeships deliver skills designed around your business needs providing the skilled workers you need for the future.
  • Apprentices tend to be eager, motivated, flexible and loyal to the company that invested in them. An apprentice is with us because they want to be – they have made an active choice to learn on the job and a commitment to a specific career.
