Summer Research Internship - Curating Historical Whaling Records for Ecological Niche Modelling

The Department of Earth Sciences is offering a paid summer research internship on a project investigating how historical whaling records can improve ecological niche models of whale habitat suitability. This role provides an opportunity to contribute to an interdisciplinary research project at the interface of marine biology, palaeobiology and macroecology, and to gain experience working with large historical ecological datasets to investigate long-term patterns in species distributions.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Oceanography and Palaeoclimatology

The post holder will join the Physical Oceanography and Palaeoclimate groups in the Department of Earth Sciences and perform numerical model data analysis relevant to two projects: MEZCAL and PalaeoGradPhan. Both projects focus on the relationship between ocean circulation and surface ocean properties, and use numerical models to understand what we can and cannot infer from imperfect observational data.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Macroecology/Palaeobiology, with a focus on machine learning model development

Reporting to the PI, Prof Erin Saupe, the post holder will be a member of a research group with responsibility for carrying out research for ERC grant ‘Determining the drivers of extinction across space and time’. The post holder will develop a new Bayesian model, MESS, to analyse the dynamics of extirpation. The MESS model will adapt the likelihood function implemented in the Dispersal Extinction Sampling model (DES) by collaborator Silvestro (Hauffe et al. 2023 MEE).

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Palaeobiology with a focus on Extinction Selectivity

Reporting to the PI, Prof Erin Saupe, the post holder will be a member of a research group with responsibility for carrying out research for ERC grant ‘Determining the drivers of extinction across space and time’. The post holder will ask which extant marine invertebrate taxa are most at risk of extinction under natural, baseline conditions today and under future anthropogenic climate change scenarios.
